Fotolia Review

Fotolia was founded in 2005 in New York City. It is one of those Microstock websites that is a pleasure to work with. It is user-friendly and there is no need to pass an exam before you can start uploading images and making sales. Because of this, beginners are happy to try their hand in this field as soon as they will have their DSLR camera.

All you have to do is take a few good shots, upload and wait for reviewer feedback. If your images are accepted, you are good to go! The average acceptance rate with Fotolia is pretty good and review turn-around time is quite fast. If you are thinking about submitting flower pictures, I would think again...these never seem to make the cut. Image prices are set based on author rank and vary from 4 to 20 credits for medium size images. Credit value depends on the site you are registered with, for Europe (eu.fotolia.com): 1 credit value is equal to 1 Euro, for US: 1 credit is equal to 1 USD, and for the UK: it is 1 GBP. For contributors I recommend signing up for the EUR or GBP site, otherwise you will only earn about 80% of an images potential revenue because of currency differences (you can earn 50 credits that can be equal to €50 or $50). For buyers the situation is vice versa, 54 credits can cost 70$ (us.fotolia.com) or €70 (eu.fotolia.com). Contributors to Fotolia will receive 20% - 44% of the sale price of an image depending on their rank. If submitting photos to microstocks is something you just do in your free time, you can expect your commission to be 23%-25%. Compared with iStock's 15% - this is a pretty good return on a hobby!Popular on Fotolia
With microstocks, choosing the right keywords to help direct clients to your image is crucial, but this is especially true on Fotolia. Here, the first seven words receive a higher weight than others, so pay close attention and make sure that your first seven keywords describe your photo well.

Want to know how much it is possible to earn? Here is my income report of 2009-2016

In 2014 Fotolia decided to follow in iStock's footsteps and launched a new project called dollarphotoclub.com where every image, regardless of size, costs $1. Such sites are referred to as "nanostock" and these prices tend to have a destructive effect on the microstock economy as a whole...I mean why would anyone pay $10 for an image that is available for $1?

At the onset of dollarphotoclub, all of Fotolia's photos where automatically opted into this bargain nanostock without owner permission. There wasn’t even as much as an email warning contributors that this was about to happen. As you can imagine, this caused an outcry from contributors and Fotolia later added an “opt-out” button to allow contributors more control over the use of their images. (BEWARE!: By default this option is ON! To Opt-Out go to Contributor area -> My preferences and switch "Sell your files on DPC?" to the “Off” option).

So what do "nanostocks" mean for buyers? They have access to images at very low prices; however, since most serious stockers are aware of, and avoid, “nanostocks”, the quality of the images tend to be poor.

Fotolia also has a nice dashboard. My favorite feature is the "Best-seller of the day" section. This feature allows you to gather information on what clients are looking for and helps you work towards the level of technical and/ or commercial quality that clients expect.

Fotolia’s closest competitor, I think, is Dreamstime.com (Review), but overall Fotolia still wins in terms of the image acceptance rate, review speed and revenues generated from commission. Also with Fotolia a payout can be requested at 50 credits (or $50) versus $100 on Dreamstime. This is just another bonus for beginners who are looking at getting cash in their pockets sooner rather than later.
